V-Flex Veneer Softener is specially formulated to treat and prepare delicate veneers, such as crotch or burl veneers, by preventing splitting and improving flexibility. This product is ideal for curved work
and serves as a modern alternative to traditional animal glue sizing techniques.
Prepare the Solution
Mix the Veneer Softener with an equal amount of water.
Avoid using the solution at full strength, as it can leave the veneer surface sticky or tacky.
Application
Apply the diluted solution to the veneer using one of the following methods:
Spraying: Spraying: Use a spray bottle for even coverage.
Brushing: Apply with a brush, ensuring all areas are thoroughly coated.
Dipping: Submerge the veneer completely in the solution for an even soak.
Drying the Veneer
Let the veneer stand until it feels dry to the touch. This typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on ambient conditions such as temperature and humidity.
Once dry, the veneer will be pliable and ready for immediate use. It can now be glued and applied without risk of splitting.
If your veneer requires additional flexibility or has a ripply texture, consider the following techniques:
Vacuum Press for Flattening:
If you have access to a vacuum press, follow these steps to flatten and prepare the veneer:
1. Wet the veneer thoroughly with the softener solution.
2. Place brown paper or similar absorbent paper on both sides of the veneer to absorb excess moisture.
3. Insert the veneer and paper stack into the vacuum bag , using a caul to apply even pressure.
4. Ensure the paper is larger than the caul to help wick away water and speed up evaporation.
5. To increase airflow and accelerate drying, place a plastic window screen between the caul and the top paper layer.
6. Change the paper as needed during the drying process to maintain absorption efficiency.
Final Moisture Check: Before proceeding with gluing or assembly, check the moisture content of the veneer in several spots to ensure it has returned to the proper level. A moisture
meter can be helpful for this step.
Use Within Two Days: The softening effect lasts only for a couple of days, so treat veneers as needed and plan to use them promptly. Pre-treating stock for extended storage is not recommended.
Store Properly: Always store the Veneer Softener in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place to maintain its effectiveness.
Plan for Cleanup: Use kraft paper or brown paper bag material during the drying process to keep your workspace clean. Avoid newspaper to prevent unwanted staining.
Handle with Care: The product is combustible and must be kept away from open flames and all sources of ignition. Use the product in a well-ventilated area to prevent the accumulation of vapors.
Proper Storage: Keep the container tightly closed and store it in a safe, cool, and dry location away from heat sources.
