VAK-Bond 2000 is a high-quality urea resin glue designed for woodworking, veneering, and curved millwork. It offers a rigid, durable bond with excellent water resistance, making it ideal for
demanding applications requiring Type II plywood standards. This glue is versatile and easy to use with a long storage life.
Storage:
Shelf Life: Store the glue powder in a cool, dry location. It can last up to 12 months if kept in a tight sealed container.
Temperature Sensitivity: Keep the glue powder and materials at temperatures above 70°F during use. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 65°F as it can affect curing quality.
Preparing Your Materials:
Ensure that the stock or wood pieces have a moisture content of 6-8%.
For oily woods like teak or rosewood:
- Wipe the surface with acetone to remove oils.
- Allow the surface to dry completely before applying glue.
For paper-backed veneers:
-Roughen the paper backing using 80-100 grit sandpaper to improve adhesion.
Perform a test piece before full application to ensure desired results.
Mixing the Glue:
Ratio:
Use 100 parts of glue powder and mix it with 65 parts of room-temperature or warmwer water by weight.
If measuring by ounces or pounds, refer to the provided weight mixing table (e.g., 1 lb glue powder to 10.4 fluid ounces of water).
How to Mix:
Place the glue powder into a container.
Gradually add the remaining water while mixing until you achieve a smooth, syrup-like consistency.
For best results, use a glue mixer attachment on a drill to achieve uniform mixing. A 110V electric drill is recommended for consistent stirring.
Application Guidelines:
Spread Rates:
Apply the glue evenly for full coverage.
-Veneering: 35-45 lbs of glue per 1,000 sq. ft.
-Edge Gluing: 40-50 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft.
Coverage Note: On average 1 pound of pre-mixed glue will cover 25 square feet. Coverage will vary due to the method that is used to apply the glue and the type of substrate. Only
apply glue to the substrate when applying wood veneers. If you apply glue to the veneer, it will curl and distort due to the water. If making a built up piece with several laminations, then glue both side.
Assembly Open Time (Time before bonding the materials):
-70°F: Up to 20 minutes.
-80°F: Up to 15 minutes.
-90°F: Up to 10 minutes.
Pressing or Clamping:
After application, press or clamp your glued pieces:
-70°F: 4-6 hours.
-90°F: 2-4 hours.
Lower temperatures will significantly extend curing time.
If needed, use an electric blanket to speed up curing in colder environments.
Post-Curing:
Allow the glued assembly to rest for 24 hours after clamping before machining or further processing.
Special Techniques and Tips:
Avoid Bleed Through: When gluing porous veneers, let the glue rest for 10-15 minutes before application to reduce excess moisture that can seep through the veneer.
Adding Yellow Glue: You can mix up to 20% liquid yellow glue with VB-2000 to improve adhesion to certain hard woods.
Avoid Paint Rollers: Use smooth, non-porous tools for glue application to prevent water absorption, which can disrupt the glue’s consistency.
Cleanup Instructions:
Clean all tools and surfaces with room-temperature or hot water while the glue is still wet.
For dried glue, use a citrus-based cleaner to remove residue effectively.
Important Notes:
Temperature Control: Temperature Control: Always work in environments above 70°F for optimal curing. Lower temperatures increase curing time and may compromise results.
Test First: Always perform a test piece to confirm the glue mix and bonding process meet your expectations.
Mixing Quantities: To simplify large projects, pre-weigh glue and water into convenient portions for easy mixing.
